Chapter 12: Retrieval

In Orbit Around Vella…

Raiden broke through the atmosphere and into space. Shortly after, Xerx, Ripley, and Ken got in formation and followed behind him en route to the Saisei debris field. As the black of space engulfed his ship, Raiden felt deeply comforted; this was home. Raiden ran his scanners and located the remnants of the bridge of the Saisei, then locked in the coordinates and transmitted them to the other pilots. The four ships set course.

On the way towards the debris field, they came across the wreckage of the Kikari warships that had given chase to the human fighter ships that tried to defend the escape pods during the massacre. As they passed the semi-demolished large Kikari war vessels, they suddenly found themselves under fire. “Evade! Evade! Evade!” Raiden hollered, making evasive maneuvers to avoid the incoming plasma fire.

Once they were clear, Raiden checked in to make sure his teammates were all still alive. Then, with as much decorum as he could muster under the circumstances, he questioned Xerx, “I thought you’d taken these ships out!?”

“Indeed,” Xerx responded, with a calmness that seemed aggravating to Raiden, “We disabled their engines during the initial attack. The resulting explosions destroyed most of each of their ships. When we traveled to the Saisei to fend off the last warship, our ships deployed their fighters. Kikari are not patient, and they follow the orders of their tribal leader. It’s a matter of honor for them to enter battle. I assumed all surviving soldiers had pursued us.”

“You assumed wrong,” Raiden said, with misplaced blame. He hated being caught off guard. “Scans show the ships are still immobile.”

“Commander,” Xerx began, ignoring the human’s slight, “even though the ships are disabled, their armor plating is still too strong for us to take them out in any sensible timeframe,” he advised.

Raiden studied his sensor feedback and was certain Xerx was right. It could take them hours to create a successful breach. He wondered if humans could learn how to build such robust ships someday. “Suggestions?”

“Sir,” Ripley began, “What if we board the vessels and take out the remaining hostiles?”

Raiden remembered his time on the Bastion, having seen the massive Kikari on the station. The idea of a face-to-face confrontation seemed suicidal. “Any other thoughts?”

Ken spoke up, “Are there any weak spots? Fuel lines?”

“Blowing up their engines breached their ships already,” Xerx explained, “Kikari vessels are built into small self-sustaining sections, similar to an insect hive. So the ship could have multiple breaches, but only the directly breached sections are compromised.”

Raiden felt a knot in his stomach as he asked, “Xerx, are you saying our only option is to board the ships?”

“If your aim is to eradicate the remaining Kikari soldiers, it would seem so,” Xerx concurred with the assessment.

“Dammit,” Raiden muttered to himself, then addressed his team, “We can’t risk leaving these ships active. When the Ethlana sends their support ships, we can’t have them come under fire. Our people are in desperate need of immediate aid.
